Face to Face
Chance forest meetings

The barred owl perched in a tree seven feet off the ground. My mostly silent walk caught his ear and his head gave a quarter turn until his wide black eyes met mine. His brown and white feathers ruffled in today’s late morning breeze. He stared as if I awakened him from a nap, but I stopped the width of a table from his perch and we both stood still, a moment of paralysis, existing so close to one we did not expect meet.
My eyes grew as wide as his. I fumbled for my phone, an attempt to capture him in light, document the meeting. But he had seen enough and spread his silent wings. He swooped down, then an effortless ascending arc to a white pine deeper into the dark of the thicket. I stepped to follow. Twigs snapped in my way, and leaf fall crackled underfoot, both screaming through the forest of my pursuit and he flew still deeper to hunt another chapter of the understory.
On the same back forty trail a week before, I huffed through a morning run, the dog somewhere behind following a scent, unseen. When I stepped to the creek a doe raised her black eyes from the water directly to mine. Water dripped from her mouth, her hooves inert in the rippled sand of the creek bottom, stood three feet from me. I startled and sidestepped before she found the sense to move, but she did not hurry. Two springing steps to the bank before she walked off toward the apple tree.
Dappled light finds the time to shade and showcase every space of the forest floor. When I kneel to the stream, I put my lips into its crystal flow to drink deep. There is no reflection to meet my eye. I peer through the water to the grains of sand tumbling each day a little farther downstream. I taste the sweetness. I replenish my soul. Here. In the forest I love, where I meet myself, face to face.
